Research Experience
Doctoral Research, 1999-2004, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Department of Research Immunology/Bone Marrow Transplantation. Laboratory Director: Donald B. Kohn, MD. Dissertation project: Investigated HIV-1-derived vector expression and biosafety; Studied oncoretroviral and lentiviral vector systems for delivery of genes into human and mouse leukemia cells for the purpose of making the cells more immunogenic; Developed a new murine model of P190 BCR-ABL-induced acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Medical Student Research Fellow, 1998-1999, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology. Laboratory Director: Angeline Douvas, MD, PhD. Project: Investigated infection of humans by a goat lentivirus called caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus (CAEV) and the possibility that such infection may offer prophylactic resistance to HIV-1 infection.

Research Assistant, 1994-1996, University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, Department of Microbiology. Laboratory Director: William Courchesne, PhD. Duties: Selective amplification and cloning of genes for guanyl-binding proteins from the opportunistic fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans.

Teaching Experience
Teaching Assistant, Microscopic Anatomy, 2001-2004, 2005-2006—Directed small group discussions amongst 25-50 medical students, organized and presented review materials, assisted with writing exam questions.

STD Educator, Community Outreach Program, 1998-1999—Taught high school students about the risks and consequences of unprotected sexual activities.

Microanatomy Tutor, Medical Scholars Program, 1998-1999—Led discussions amongst groups of 10-30 first year medical students about medical histology, created handouts and practice questions for students.
