You’re surfing around the web and come across a link to a scientific journal article you’d like to read. You casually follow the series of links until you finally realize that you can’t download the full article unless you go through the proxy server on Stanford’s medical library website.

No? Never done it. Oh, OK, well I have. Many more times than I’d like to discuss. Rather than always having to restart a series of navigations through the library’s site just to refind the article, I have come up with a better solution: a bookmarklet! (I love bookmarklets, BTW.)

So, as a service to the Stanford community, I’d like to share this bookmarklet I wrote which allows you to directly access the article you want through the Stanford proxy without having to navigate to another page.

How does it work? Drag this link to your bookmark bar, then click on it when you’re on a journal page with a link to an article you’d like to read in full. Log in with your SUNET ID, and voila, full access.

Their error message, which you will note has the word “accessible” spelled incorrectly, directs the user to call them if you believe your inability to log in is an error. (How could it not be, assholes?) Turns out that when you probe the depths of the ACS website there’s nary a phone number to be found anywhere.

The one link that you think offers a glimmer of hope for finding a way to contact a human leads to a dead page.

This should be punishable by internment in Guantanamo.
