Photo Friday—Macro

It’s funny that macro came up as a subject on photofriday this week, since I was just a few days ago talking to Eric about needing to buy a proper macro lens. I still haven’t decided what to get. I’d like to get the Canon MP-E so that I’ll be able to photograph the hair on a fly’s butt, but I’ve read (and Eric confirmed) that lens is difficult to use, due to the extremely shallow depth-of-field. Speaking of shallow DOF, I know this photo’s is a hair too shallow, but I was shooting handheld in shade, so I couldn’t really stop down. Anyways, I figure if I post enough slightly OOF photos, I can call it a “style.” :)

whoa – someone put a prOn pic on the side where there used to be a cute dancing banana :( bastards!!!
Really? It’s fine now, but that is one of the risks of linking to an offsite image. If it happens again, I’ll have to pull the banana. …Um, ouch.
Shalow DoF is good. For this if the background is clear it will take away from the subject.
If you want more of the flowers in focus, wouldn’t using an f8 or f11 work?
Aaron — the Canon 100mm USM macro isn’t bad, especially with a diopter on it! check out the URL I included as my website (click on my name here). It was taken with Canon 100mm USM macro, with two speedlights. I forgot what aperture I was using, but I was unable to stop down past around f13 because the speedlights were powerful enough.
Oooh. Nice pic. I could live with that (the macro capability, not the fly). :) Maybe I’ll go that route.
