Oh! Finally I can rally around Bush’s defense! ;)
On a serious note, I don’t agree at all with the flack that Bush has gotten regarding the jokes he made during the roast. Granted, I do find humor in just about anything, but I think Bush was trying to make the best out of a bad situation. I *really* doubt he’d be insensitive enough to start making jokes about peoples limbs getting blown off and what not, which I guess is the logical conclusion that some people reach with the subject matter of his jokes.
The jokes didn’t bother me at all *shrug*
But then again, jokes about 9-11, or ethiopian jokes, or black jokes, or white jokes, or fat jokes, or whatever don’t either.
Within the context of the roast, I don’t think it was inappropriate at all.
I think Bush joking about the lack of WMDs is extremely tasteless, regardless of the context. At this point, over 600 American soldiers have been killed in Iraq, either in direct combat or in accidents related to military operations. Nearly 3000 Americans have been wounded in action. Not to mention the 10,000 Iraqi civilians who have been killed. These would be more understandable, but nonetheless horrific, if we had a valid reason for being there in the first place. The war in Iraq was sold to the American public, to the US Congress, and to the United Nations on the basis that Saddam Hussein possessed WMDs and, this is key, THAT’S ALL IT WAS SOLD ON. It would be one thing if we hadn’t found the “mobile weapons laboratories,” or evidence of a nuclear weapons program, but the fact that we haven’t found ANYTHING AT ALL related to WMDs in Iraq (not even warheads with chemical payloads) undermines the legitimacy of the action. So, to get back to the White House correspondents dinner, Bush stepped over the line, IMO, with the WMD joke, because the president carries a grave responsibility when he sends American troops into harm’s way—he must only do so when America’s safety (or the safety of allies, when treaties stipulate) is truly threatened—and since the WMD justification is legitimately being questioned as either an outright lie or one of the most severe failures of American intelligence in history means that it should be off limits for jokes, because neither of those scenarios (and one of them HAS to be true) is the least bit funny. (I really don’t know whether it was a lie or an intelligence failure, but if it was the latter, a lot of heads should be rolling at the CIA—from the top down—and that hasn’t been happening).
I agree with you on the way 100%. Regarding Bush’s comedic faux paux, I can see why people are bent outta shape because of the subject matter, but I don’t apply nearly the same standards to jokes as I do more legit conversations.
Oh well :) I agree with almost every other damn thing you say, so I guess it’s about time I find something to nit-pick ;)
Err, meant to be “agree 100% on the war”, not “way” :P
Time for sleepies…
